Jonathan stood behind Bethany and placed a gentle but firm hand on her shoulder as she retold the story. The detective sat there and listened without interruption. When she finished she looked at the clock over the detective’s head. “It’s now two a.m. It’s been more than twenty-four hours since my sister went missing.”

Jonathan nodded and leaned toward the detective’s desk. “So? What do you say now? Will you go after Holly and Trey?”

The detective took a deep breath, his hands making a steeple under his chin. “While the attack on Miss Bethany is undeniable, there is no evidence to support that it was connected with the disappearance of Holly and Trey. However, now that they have been missing for over twenty-four hours, we will begin searching for them.”

Jonathan’s grip on Bethany’s shoulder tightened. “You still won’t believe that this has to do with the Christmas Killer.”

The detective looked at Jonathan, and his eyes narrowed. “I think you’re reading too much into things… Former Detective Stevens.”

The grip on Bethany’s shoulder became painful, but she didn’t wince. She had a higher tolerance for pain than most, and right now she was more concerned with what was going on. She wondered why he didn’t defend himself and tell the detective what he’d told her in the woods earlier. Wasn’t he just on a sabbatical?

She twisted around and looked at Jonathan who had a hard scowl and a clenched jaw. After another moment of the detective and Jonathan in locked glares, Jonathan turned around and walked out.

Bethany turned her attention back toward the detective seated at his desk. “What do you mean former detective?”

He took a deep breath. “Detective Stevens was on the Kelly Hansen case when she went missing. I’m sure you heard about that on the news last year?”

Bethany nodded. “The poor thing was killed before the police found her.”

“Right. My best friend in Boulder told me that Stevens was so dead set on one lead that he wouldn’t even look at the others. Stevens had the idea in his head that they were on the right track when they couldn’t have been farther off course.”

“So… you think the same thing is happening here?”

The detective nodded. “I do. Especially since he’s emotionally compromised. He sees what he wants to see and nothing more.”

“But I was attacked while we were out looking for Holly and Trey. You can’t discount that.”

“Miss Larson, I understand that you’ve been through a scary ordeal, but anyone could have attacked you. Not to mention that this area doesn’t fit the Christmas Killer’s profile.”

“Christmas is the day after tomorrow. What if Jonathan is right? We’ll wake up to our relatives' bodies on Christmas morning.” She shuddered at the thought, doing her best not to picture that image in her head.

The detective shook his head and leaned back in his groaning chair. “Miss Larson, I think you’re ignoring the facts.”

Anger welled up in her. This detective was too much. He didn’t know the whole story and seemed dead set on doing the opposite of whatever Jonathan had to say.
